Entering a cask purchase is possibly one of the easiest things to do. On some occasions, clients may want to compare us to other cask brokers or directly to a distillery which might seem “cheaper” when compared to Paladin. However, it is the Exit and the Return on Investment (ROI) you gain from your cask that makes Paladin unique. We always start your journey to cask ownership with an “EXIT” strategy in mind.
What to Look out for When Investing in a Cask
Distilleries often fail to inform you that the cask you are buying is for personal consumption ONLY.
- For example, at the end of year 10. You will have to pay huge charges to release your cask from a UK bonded warehouse (and pay VAT)! So now what? Do you actually want to ship 350 bottles to your home to drink with friends?
- Many cask brokers fail to tell you that even though you paid an inflated entrance cost to purchase your cask, the “what” and the “how” they will provide you with an exit option is also not explained.
- Most cask brokers keep selling the casks onwards and this is where the true problem lies. For whisky’s potential to be realised it must be bottled! The Macallan you hear so much about in the news is thebottle that gained $1M dollar, not the cask.
- Be aware of what you wish for. Ensure there is a true exit built in your purchase price or else you will be staring at a huge cost and no way to monetise your cask investment.
Paladin starts every portfolio with an exit strategy in mind and we ensure you know the full costs associated with your exit! We will charge our admin fee on exit but wait with you to realise the full potential of your cask. Whether you choose to bottle and use our distribution network or sell your cask onward. In both scenarios we remain one of the very few casks investment companies in the industry who wait to share in the reward with you.
Our admin fees are also “capped” and thus we ensure you maximise your potential ROI. Even though we might end up waiting several years with you! We call this ETHICAL investing.
We Succeed When our Clients Succeed
Under our revenue model, Paladin only succeeds if our clients succeed.
- Our fees are always tied to your success.
- We allow you to Exit in the following 2 ways:
- Sell on your cask where we charge a fee if the cask is sold within bond to another client/company. This is our “slab” model. You read that right! If your cask does not appreciate, we do not charge fees up to the first 10%. Only ever at maximum, charge a fee of 10% only if your cask appreciates over 50%
- If you choose to Exit via our bottling program, you bear all costs to bring the bottle to market (on average around 5K – 25K GBP). However, when we retail the bottles for you, we try to ensure you recoup all your invested costs (i.e. cost to purchase cask plus cost to bring to market). Onlyfter these costs are paid back to you, will we split any profits (at a certain percentage depending on the cask value).
